​A Survey of the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Linxian County

Linxian County is located on the east bank of the Yellow River, with a long history, profound cultural accumulation, rich and colorful intangible cultural heritages. At present, the protection of intangible cultural heritage has been incorporated into the economic and social development plan of the county, and the municipal and county governments also include the protection funds in the budget of the corresponding level.

The list of representative items of intangible cultural heritage in Linxian County has been basically worked out. There are 3 national representative items and 3 protection units; 2 provincial items and 2 protection units; 4 municipal items and 4 protection units; 41 items at county level were announced by county government in two batches in 2009 and 2012 respectively, and 27 protection units and 37 inheritors were identified.

     Three national level items:

Linxian Daoqing Drama

announced in 2006;

protected unit: Linxian Daoqing Drama Research Center (in Lv Liang Folk Arts Troupe);

two national inheritors: Zhang Ruifeng and Ren Linlin;

four municipal inheritors: Li Xiangqin, He Guifang, Gao Yunqiang, and Ma Shaoyi.

    Linxian Shantou Yangge (folk dance)

    announced in 2008

    protected unit: Yangge Art Association of Linxian;

    three provincial inheritors: Zhang Jinsheng, Guo Pihan and He Shengliang;

    eight municipal level inheritors: Wan Shanlong, Li Yanping, Liu Yongyan, Gao Yanming, Zhao Jiang, Li Zefeng, Niu Tingming, and Yang Jianwen.

Linxian Suona (folk music)

    announced in 2014.

    protected unit: Linxian Dasuona Training Center;

    one national level inheritor: Liu Xiaohong;

    one provincial level inheritor: Liu Yi;

    three municipal level inheritors: Qu Jianwei, Zhang Qingshan, and Kang Wenjie.

Three provincial level items:

Linxian Sanxianshu Ballad

announced in 2009;

protected unit: Linxian Ballad Singers Association;

two provincial level inheritors: Kang Yunxiang and Zhang Linfeng;

two municipal level inheritors: Kang Guosheng and Kang Baosheng.

Qikou Haozi (folksong by helmsman)

announce in 2013;

protected unit: Linxian Folk Performing Arts Co., Ltd.

municipal level inheritor: Li Shixi.

Traditional Color Sculpture Art

announced in 2015;

protected unit: Linxian Traditional Color Sculpture Research and Protection Center;

three municipal inheritors: Qin Qingping, Liu Xiaolin and Qin Jianhua.

Three municipal level items:

Linxian Mayu Tofu Making Technique

announced in 2013

protected unit: Linxian Mayu Tofu Association;

two municipal level inheritors: Yang Zhiying and Zhang Yongjun.

Linxian Qingtang “Honey-Soaked Jujube Zongzi” traditional handmade technique

announced in 2016;

protected unit: Linxian Qingtang Food Co., Ltd.;

two municipal level inheritors: Li Xiaoying and Zhang Xinqin; three county level inheritors.

   Linxian Folk Paper-cutting

announced in 2016;

protected unit: Linxian Paper Cutting Inheritance and Protection Center;

one municipal level inheritor: Wu Yixing;

three county level inheritors.

II. Protection

1. Linxian county carries out protection in an effort to salvage the items and develop them in an integral and innovative way through enhancing production. These efforts include three aspects as following:

---Compiling and publishing books, as the Selected Traditional Drama of Linxian Daoqing in 2008, Zhang Linfeng Ballad Collection (I) Singing for linxian County in 2010, Linxian Dasuona in 2013 and Yangge Art View of Linxian (two volumes) in 2016, etc.

---Publishing audio-visual products, as the six episodes of Linxian SantouYangge in 2016, Dasuona Yangge Album (by Liu Xiaohong) in 2013; and

---Making movies, as in 2015, the Santou Yangge themed film Santou and his lady funded by Lvliang Yellow River Folk Art Co., Ltd. was debut, which won the Best Music Film Award at the 2015 World National Film Festival in Los Angeles; in 2016, Linxian Dasuona themed film "The Yellow River Descendent" produced by Xi'an Film Studio was debut.

2. Linxian pays efforts to revitalize traditional craftsmanship. For example, intangible cultural heritage -- Linxian Qingtang “Honey-Soaked Jujube Zongzi” traditional handmade technology was fully showcased in the Dragon Boat Festival ceremony for three consecutive years, which was widely recognized by the society.

3. Linxian initiates program of “intangible cultural heritage in scenic spot”. On some major festivals like May Day or National Day, such heritages as Dasuona, Daoqing Drama, Santou Yangge and others will be performed at the ancient town of Qikou.

4. Linxian launched the program of Rural Culture Memory and the project of Intangible Cultural Heritage Supporting Poverty Relief. Firstly, the government subsidizes public performances and exhibition activities of protected units. Secondly, folk culture festivals are held to develop cultural industries.

5. In 2015, a seminar was held on the inheritance and protection of Santou Yangge in Linxian County, and 12 villages were determined as the first batch of “Authentic Yangge Demonstration Village”.

A special evening party on intangible cultural heritage was held on January 11, 2019; The project of the 4th Ancient Village and Town Conference carried out activities such as exhibition and performance; Projects such as Linxian Dasuona, Linxian Daoqing Drama, Linxian Santou Yangge and others were performed at Qingtang Zongzi Folk Culture Festival.

The foothold of the protection of intangible cultural heritages in the new era is protection in scientific manner, inheritance and promotion. As far as traditional crafts are concerned, enhancing the ability of inheriting should help craftsmen acquire and enhance three perspectives, one concept and some knowledge. The first is to discover the beauty of the local community and showcase it in rich forms. The second is to have world vision, understand how the traditional crafts of other countries inherit and develop, get the reference and inspiration, improve the cultural consciousness and confidence, and form its own style. The third point is to build their creation or design on the basis of people’s needs and expand the variety of categories. While helping craftsmen enrich their creative design, understanding the basic principles and necessary knowledge about material handling, function design and tool making, they can do more research on technical bottleneck problems and perfect their traditional technique knowledge system.
