Overview of Fenyang College
Fenyang College of Shanxi Medical University (FYCSMU) is an independent secondary college under Shanxi Medical University. The history of FYCSMU can be traced back to 1923 when North China Mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) founded and named the school as Fenyang Senior Nursing School, Shanxi. After vicissitudes, it was renewed in 1985 and gained its current name in 1996. The 94 years of establishment and 32 years of regeneration have bred the motto of FYCSMU that upholds “Benevolence & Perfection”.


FYCSMU covers a floor area of 338,300 m2, with a building area of 146,800 m2. It owns 3 affiliated hospitals, 24 training hospitals, 5 community healthcare centers, among which 25 rank as national third-grade class-A general hospitals; 12 practice teaching centers, among which 3 are provincial demonstration centers; 655,000 paper books and 937,000 e-books in stock; and full-campus Wi-Fi coverage accessible to students and faculties.


FYCSMU engages with 488 full-time teachers (including affiliated hospitals), of which 235 members have a doctor or master degree. There are 29 postgraduate tutors, 17 guest professors and academic advisers from Peking University, University of Oxford and more.

Students & Alumni

FYCSMU enrolls student nationwide, currently there are 8,952 students, among which 48 are pursuing master degree, 6,356 for bachelor degree, and 2,548 for junior college diploma. Targeted at cultivating “applied talents oriented toward the grassroots, committed to social service, sound in moral, intellectual and physical development, and answering the call of medical and health services”, FYCSMU has fostered more than 28,000 excellent graduates, among which there are Wang Guiying and Yang Hui, who were awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal; Bai Beiwu, former director of the Bureau of Schistosomiasis Control, Ministry of Health; and Guo Qinglan (wife of Kwarkanath S. Kotnis), international communist fighter and the Sino-India Friendship Ambassador.

Study & Disciplines

FYCSMU runs master’s degree, bachelor’s degree and junior college diploma programmes. It offers 12 master’s degree programmes, including nursing, human anatomy and histoembryology, biochemistry and molecular biology, physiology, pathology and pathophysiology, clinical laboratory diagnostics, pharmacology, internal medicine, surgery, neurology, otolaryngology, and public health; 8 bachelor’s degree programmes, including clinical medicine, stomatology, medical imaging, nursing, medical examination technology, optometry, rehabilitation therapy, and medical laboratory technology; 5 junior college diploma programmes, including clinical medicine, nursing, midwifery, drug distribution and management, health management and gerontological nursing (subbranch of nursing). As the feature specialty of FYCSMU, nursing has been rated as the national feature specialty spot, provincial key discipline and provincial brand discipline. By far, FYCSMU has grown into a well-structured, multi-disciplined and characteristic medical education institution, contributing to the development of local economy and society while catering to the demands for medical and health talents.
Research & Partnerships

FYCSMU has been expanding exchange and cooperation both at home and abroad. Through extensive demonstration and investigation, it has formed domestic partnerships with BGI-Shenzhen, Tianjin Medical University, DIAN Diagnostics, Shanxi High-tech Medical Testing Center. During 1997-2018, it sent 626 international students to the Singapore Full-scholarship International Student Programme for Nursing Specialty Diploma for 22 consecutive years, setting a record span across China. Furthermore, FYCSMU carried out overseas cultural immersion programme with Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore; signed Memorandum of Cooperation with the New College Lanarkshire and the University of Aberdeen, the United Kingdom, and the University of Adelaide, Australia; and reached agreements on cooperation intention with Stevens-Henager College, the United States, and School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork, Ireland. The sharing of resources and complementation of advantages are made possible through all these activities.

Going forward, FYCSMU will endeavour to building a medical college with well-matched scale and structure, excellency and feature specialties that are aligned with the demands of higher education reform and the development of medical and health services, underpinning the local medical and health cause with talents and intelligence.
